newNCESA Approves New Scantlings - After four years of experimentation the NCESA membership approved the use of the Asymmetrical Sail for 2008, including changes to hull scantlings to add an asymmetrical bow sprit with appropriate control lines, changes to the mast scantlings to add diamond stays to support the additional load of a masthead sail (this addition is allowed with either spinnaker configuration, allowing an optional second set of spreaders to support the diamond wires and further stabilize the mast), changes to sail scantlings to provide dimensions for an asymmetrical spinnaker, keeping the symmetrical spinnaker a legal configuration, but only allowing a boat to register appropriate spinnakers for a regatta (so that you cannot flip back and forth), and allowing only one asymmetrical spinnaker to be registered for a regatta. Click Here to read the new scantlings and learn about making the change.

Jay Rendall Takes Third at MC Invite - A little home lake knowledge goes a long way! White Bear's Jay Rendall took third at the heavily contested ILYA MC Invitational regatta held at Lake Mendota WI this past weekend. Jay grew up on Mendota and raced there prior to moving to White Bear. The regatta was sailed out of the magnificent Bishops Bay Country Club and MYC was host to 37 boats from across the ILYA. Six races were completed and after a difficult first race 20th, Jay was never out of the top ten. Jamie Kimball from Spring Lake won the event. Congratulations Jay! Click Here for full results.

Way to go Andrew!

2006 Sailing Instructions Modified - Our 2006 Sailing Instructions incorrectly stated "Scoring for DNC, DNS, DNF, DSQ, OCS, etc. is according to the RRS Appendix A4." That should have been RRS Appendix A9 and it has been corrected in the online Sailing Instructions. Other differences between Did Not Start (DNS) and Did Not Compete (DNC) have also been cleared up. As it only meant a point difference here and there, no final results were affected.

Race Management Reminder - The Race Management Oversight Committee (RMOC) was established several years ago to provide an avenue for sailors to give feedback regarding the conduct of our racing program. (Note that according to Yacht Club rules, all members, including registered sailors, are not to criticize any club employees, including our Race Officer.) Guidance and management of the Race Officer is handled by the Executive Officer of the Sailing Division and the RMOC was established to assist the Executive Officer in that role.

Need Help Registering for 2006? We have implemented a web-based system to automate many of the tasks required to keep our Club operating. The new system includes both "public" web pages (that anyone can access) and "private" web pages (those that our members will access with a User name and Password). Registered members who were active in 2005 should have gotten an E-Mail message with their login information in April. If you lost your password, Click Here, then enter your valid E-mail address, check the box that says "I forgot my password, please e-mail it to me" and then click on the "Submit" button. Within a short time you should get an e-mail with your password.

Still need help? Call Lee Alnes at 651.407.6338.

2006 Results Now Online - This year we are able to post our race results much faster and easier than ever before! There are two ways to see the results - simply click on the "Results" button on the left hand side of this page as you have always done, or open the Calendar page, select a month and click on any of the fleet identifiers in the race schedule (i.e. C, Cat, MC, etc.)

Need to Contact Another Sailing Division Member? Our Membership Roster is online and many of our members have chosen to show their contact information to other registered members. We are mindful of your privacy concerns and this secure system allows you to set your privacy preferences (the default is that only members can see your information). To view the Roster, go to the Members page, login with your User name and Password, then click on "Roster by Person" to see the listing of those folks who have shared their contact information.

2006 Social Calendar - Our 2006 Social Calendar is online on the race schedule and also availabel as a PDF file suitable for printing and posting on your family bulletin board. Don't miss another great party like the one last Saturday at Diane and Van Johnson's. Click Here.

ILYA Awards 2007 Class E Invitational to White Bear - The Inland Lake Yachting Association has accepted our bid to host the 2007 E Scow Invitational Regatta at White Bear! This is one of the premier events in the ILYA and winning the bid is further recognition of the great things that are happening at our club. The regatta will be held July 12 - 15, 2007. More details will be online as they become available.

WBSS Looking for Volunteers - The The White Bear Sailing School would like to offer sailing instruction with its E scow this summer. The students will be primarily adults and some of our Sailing School instructors. This is a great way to help us increase the participation in the E fleet for club racing and also help our other fleets.

Volunteer instructors are needed for these E boat classes. To volunteer you need not commit to a certain time or even to an amount of time. The class offerings will be adjusted according to the availability of instructors. Instructors do not need to have E boat sailing experience although that would help - racing experience in any of our fleets is ok. Please contact Bob Broen or Dave Keane for more information.

Automated Electronic Registration, Scoring and Fleet Roster System - With that in mind, C Scow Fleet Captain Tom Shield has been hard at work this winter developing a web-based system that will automate many of the tasks required to keep our Club operating. The new system is up and running and it includes both "public" web pages (that anyone can access) and "private" web pages (those that our members will access with a User name and Password). Registered members who were active in 2005 will get an E-Mail message with their login information so be on the lookout for it in April.

The new system is driven by a secure database containing information such as your boat name and number, your name, address, etc. We are very aware of your privacy concerns and you will have full control over whether any other members can see your information. Furthermore, we will NOT collect any Credit Card numbers or other information that might be a liability for identity theft (such as SSN's). The only information we will have stored is essentially what someone could look up in a phone book or online.

Benefits: The biggest benefits will be time savings for the team that makes your racing and social program happen and timeliness of information and communications to all our members. Registration will be done online so we don't have to re-key your information (you will still print your Reg. form and mail it in with your check). All the math will be done for you so no mistakes get made. The Registrar can access your records and mark you as paid so you will get scored in races. Fleet Rosters will generate automatically. E-mail communications by fleet, or club-wide can be done automatically. The Judge will simply enter race positions online following each race and scores will be calculated and instantly uploaded to the website. Our Calendar (both Social and Racing) will be database-driven making it very easy to update in subsequent years. The Calendar will also link to race results as results accumulate.

Special Thanks to Tom Shield for the fantastic job he has done creating this tool for us!

NCESA Asym Voted Down - The National Class E Scow Association has voted NOT to adopt the Asymmetrical Spinnaker at this time. A clear majority wanted the change (57.7%) but a two-thirds vote of all registered regular members was required for passage. This issue generated three times the typical scantling change ballots and if nothing else got a lot of people to join NCESA. Click Here for the NCESA website to learn more.

Johnson Joins ILYA Hall of Fame - At the 2006 ILYA Winter Inland held in Pewaukee, WI, J.O. Johnson was inducted into the ILYA Hall of Fame. His grandson Steve Johnson of White Bear accepted the award. J.O. Johnson moved to White Bear Lake in 1893 from Norway and began his career working for Gus Amundson of Amundson Boat Works.

Two years later he struck out on his own and founded Johnson Boat Works. He began work on a new type of sailboat that would ride on top of the water, instead of plowing through it. His creation would be 38 feet long with a radical dish design so it could skim across the waves of inland lakes. The boat was named the Minnezitka and would become the first Class A Scow. The Minnezitka was remarkably similar to today's A Scow design after over 100 years of development.

In 1932 he invented the
16 foot Class X boat which is still raced actively throughout the Inland and draws one of the largest youth sailing contingents in the world each year to the Championship regatta.

Johnson was a true genius who invented many of our modern scow classes and made major contributions to the White Bear Yacht Club and the Inland Lake Yachting Association. Click Here for more information about J.O. Johnson.

Stan Hill - With great sadness we have learned that White Bear sailor Stan Hill passed away on Christmas Day. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Stan was a great promoter of scow racing and an asset to the White Bear Yacht Club. We'll never forget him arriving at the club for cocktail parties dressed in his blue blazer and neatly pressed slacks - having Windsurfed all the way from Mahtomedi! He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Services are Friday, January 13 at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi with visitation at 1 p.m. and memorial service beginning at 3 p.m. Memorials preferred to Century College Foundation, White Bear Lake Area Educational Foundation, Mahtomedi Educational Foundation, or any other charity of the donor’s choosing.

The pen, Harken explained, is a reminder that everything we do in the ILYA is about having fun. Knowing Tom as we do, we're confident that tradition will be upheld during his term. Congratulations Tom!

Race Management Update - The Race Management Oversight Committee (RMOC) was established several years ago to provide an avenue for sailors to give feedback regarding the conduct of our racing program. (Note that according to Yacht Club rules, all members, including registered sailors, are not to criticize any club employees including our Race Officer.) Guidance and management of the Race Officer is handled by the Executive Officer of the Sailing Division and the RMOC was established to assist the Executive Officer in that role. This process has worked very well the past few years.

Based on recent input from the sailing membership, the RMOC has made an official suggestion that our race courses be more varied, and thus more challenging, by setting them up to use the entire lake where possible. This includes setting courses using the commercial bay, the Yacht Club bay and even courses completely in the Yacht Club bay. A significant variation between morning and afternoon races is particularly desirable.

Of course we recognize that in practice there are many restrictions on setting more varied courses, such as wind speed and direction, weeds, reefs, other boaters using the lake on busy days, proper course length for fleets, etc. However, this request for change is coming from very experienced sailors and when possible we will follow this request. We fully expect some complaints may come as a result of these changes, but please make sure you provide your input through the proper channels by informing your RMOC members.

Long time WBYC sailor Ken Broen has recently joined the RMOC. Ken brings nearly 35 years of sailing experience to the committee. Ken started in Class X and has sailed in almost every kind of boat we race at White Bear. He currently races in the E fleet.
