The International Optimist dinghy (Opti) is the primary training boat used throughout the world. Although slow to catch on in the Midwest, Opti sailing has grown at a tremendous rate in the last ten years due to the affordability of the boat. The design is a flat bottomed, hard-chine, pram-bowed dinghy which can be constructed from a single sheet of 4x8 plywood (although most modern boats are fiberglass). The boat is approved by the International Sailing Federation for sailors under 16 years of age and is sailed in over 95 countries by over 150,000 people. |
